Modeling complex phenomena and analyzing extremely large quantities of data are key tasks required to advance many areas of research. The National Science Foundation continues to provide shared resources that enable scientists and engineers to carry out these important tasks, first through the TeraGrid and now through XSEDE , the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment project. The Technology Investigation Service (TIS) provides a capability to identify, track, and evaluate hardware and software technologies that could be used in the XSEDE or any other cyberinfrastructure. The results of TIS will be used to inform both the XSEDE community and the wider computational science community of technologies that can improve the capabilities, usability, and reliability of the user environment. A team of expert personnel from the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), and the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) is actively engaged in the Technology Investigation Service.
